Fab Little Quilt Swap: Ideas

Earlier this month I was invited to participate in the Fab Little Quilt Swap hosted on flickr. How could I resist when I was asked to play along? ;-) Once I got my partner I had to keep looking at their photostream and blog, you know, the basic pre-swap stalking. After a short bit I quickly decided that a rainbow of mostly solids would be nice. Here's the palette:

I liked the fabrics and figured that anything missing would easily be found in my scraps. But what in the world was I going to make? For a short while I thought that I'd make churn dashes in a variety of sizes (that may end up being my plan B if plan A doesn't work out.) Then I looked through one of Kaffe Fassett's lovely books and thought about making one of them in miniature. But you know how it goes, as I was touring the internet I found Carol Taylor's site and immediately fell in love with her quilts. Actually one of the ladies in the Shir Hadash quilters had taken one of her classes and showed us her couched circles quilt ... to die for! My inspiration would be taken from Carol Taylor's Moonshadows quilt, one of her confetti series. Oooh, how I love that quilt. I thought that the graphic nature of it would be perfect for my swap partner.

Here's my initial sketch and interpretation of Carol Taylor's design for my palette of fabrics/colors:

I'll probably wing it and sew it in big sections at a time. I'm not sure how the final piece will turn out. Hopefully it'll be a success. The sketch has the middle section a bit too aqua, it'll probably lean more towards the warm shades of reds/oranges and yellows with just a hint of green, pink and aqua. So far I haven't tried anything yet because I still have to pre-wash the fabrics with a color catcher and finish the binding and top for the Shir Hadash quilters. Wish me luck on it!
