My doll club, Gals & Dolls of San Jose, recently had a challenge doll project. We had to make a monochromatic doll. Every detail of the doll, including the skin-tone, had to be a shade of one color. Other than that there were no limitations. We could make a cloth doll, ATD (Artist Trading Doll) or ATC (Artist Trading Card) or whatever version of a doll that we chose to create. I wasn't sure what to make other than that it couldn't take too much time because of all the projects that I had previously started. An ATD is an ideal project that takes just a few hours. The polymer face that I bought at Doll U started the color choice. It was such an unusual piece that reminded me of a wood grain.
The ATD needed to be sturdy so I cut out a doll shape from a piece of mat board borrowed from the back of a sketchbook and cut it out with scissors. (Note to self, invest in some X-acto knives.) The arms were cut from a separate piece of tag board. Instead of using scrapbook papers I looked to my fabric stash for different shades of browns - quilter's cotton, a sparkle novelty knit, ultrasuede, felt, lace, ribbon, buttons and a beaded trim. Even the text came from a printed cotton. An interesting project. Next time I'll remember to incorporate some type of hanger like Jacque Uetz did on the ATD she sent me. Oh, and she's approximately 8" tall.
