Amy of Park City Girl is hosting the second Blogger Quilt Festival of 2009. For all of us quilters who can't attend Quilt Market, Amy has put together our very own virtual quilt festival. There will be lots of fabulous quilts, talented quilters and did I mention prizes?
My entry is one of the many baby quilts that I've made over the years. This one was made for my friend Tina's little boy. I've known Tina since the very first time I set foot on our high school campus for our entry tests. We've been friends ever since. So when she announced that she was expecting a son I knew that she should have a special quilt.
At the time Moda's Funky Sock Monkey fabrics had just come out with their second collection. How could I not use sock monkeys in a little boy's quilt? But I didn't want it to be just so-so. I needed the right design and saw a great one in Alex Anderson's Baby Quilts with Love book.
I really like the softness of minkee so I used little bits of a bright yellow one. Word of warning, it's a difficult fabric to piece with but the end results make it worthwhile.
Unfortunately all the original photos were on my old computer which was stolen. Thank goodness I put them on flickr so they're not totally lost.
Here's the quilt:
I embroidered/quilted little sock monkeys in three of the four corners, saving the last corner for the baby's birth information.

And the baby's name - I sewed the quilt label on the reverse side of this embroidery. Otherwise it'd just be reverse letters:
And the matching card that went with the quilt:
Baby quilts are such great quilt projects. First, they're fairly small so you can make them quickly. Second, they're for a child so you can use any combo of fabric without worrying about whether it will fit in with a decor or not. And most importantly, they're for a new baby and will be used with love. What more can a quilter ask for? That said, I have to get cracking - there are two baby quilts that need to be sewn.
Thanks for stopping by! Go check out all the other quilts in the festival. Oh and if you want, I originally posted my embroidery sock monkeys for people to use here.
