Friday I went to the 2011 Pacific International Quilt Fest (PIQF) and spent hours looking at quilts. There were so many gorgeous ones but a few really caught my eye. As usual, I was taken by the ones that had strong, vibrant displays of color. They were bold and oh so beautiful. Here's just a few to give your weekend an opening blast of color.
Calamari Time by Karlyn Bue Lohrenz - The colors are beautiful, the black/white isn't over-powering but instead serves as a restful background for the jolts of limes, purples and oranges. And to top it off, the quilting is absolutely amazing.
Grass Trees by Gloria Loughman has those wonderful bursts of limes and yellows of what look like sea anemones or perhaps a type of coral, or perhaps they are a type of grassy tree. Either way, they draw your eye in and seem to dance in front of you. There's a lot of thread work to give life to them.
Montana Tigers by Karlyn Bue Lohrenz .. another stunning use of colors and perfect quilting. I especially like how she's over quilted the backgrounds so that you get these little trapunto puffs of geometric shapes for another dimension. This won a Judge's Choice ribbon.
Past - Mother Earth by Genie Becker is a little wall hanging with bursts of colors and a very strong hand painted image.
Hot Town - Summer in the City by Janet McCallum is just pure color with a lot of silks and those 3D buttons for contrasts. Lovely and a retro 60s feeling.
All Roads Lead to Jerusalem by Shani Leser .. beautiful colors, rich layers of fabrics make this a very painterly quilt. It makes me want to pluck one of those pomegranates off the tree.
These were just a few of the quilts that I liked. There are more to follow plus I may go over there again today to re-photograph a few blurred shots. Hope you enjoyed them.
