Saturday I went back to the 2011 Pacific International Quilt Fest (PIQF) to meet up with Julie of Floribunda during her class break. I also got another chance to walk through the quilt displays. Here's some more fantastic quilts to ooh and aah over.
I noticed some different ways of hanging quilts. These ones in particular made me think more of artwork than quilts in general.
Petal Fall by Janet Windsor .. mounted on two artist canvases .. lovely colors and movement.
The Artful Leaf by Sandee Harvey and her quilting group, "Out of the Box" .. somewhat whimsical but clever way to display this quilt. It's a fantastic way to unify several different quilting styles into one cohesive piece. I really like the hand quilting on the detail circle below.
Dancing Circles 2 by Lyn Gonzaga ... these pieces are held together with beads that seem to mirror the applique' circles in the quilt. Another great color study. I love the uneven edges plus the beaded fringe.
Of course how could I skip the whimsical quilts? These are just a few of those. Gotta love a sense of humor in a quilt.
It Came From Beneath the Sea by Roberta Deluz .. the first thing that caught my eye was the luscious coral color of the octopus. It looks hand dyed and is so very vibrant against the blues and greys of the cityscape. And take a look at the suckers! They definitely are a fitting place to use rhinestones.
Grass Valley by Jan Reed .. I'm not normally a fan of big giant iguanas, but this one (who's name is Juan by the way) is spectacular. Jan used over 250 pieces of fabric in this quilt and a multitude of techniques: regular and reverse applique', set-in piecing, hand beading, and painting with Prismacolor pencils, fabric paint and metallic threads. Take a really close look ... Juan dominates this quilt but if you take another gander you'll see a Mayan mask and pyramid. Stunning quilt!
Magic in Times Square by Janet Fogg .. Great colors and use of novelty prints in this quilt. Of course being from LA originally I can't help but think of the LA Lakers with the strong use of purples and yellow. Looking at this again I'm sorry that I didn't get a closeup shot of the taxi since it is quilted with lots of traditional feathers. However in the shot of Spiderman you can just make out the start of the quilted words "To Infinity and Beyond" .. surely a nod to Toy Story and the novelty print to the lower right. Yes, there's lots of whimsy here, but it's was created with such a strong mastery of traditional quilting. Take a look at the puzzle piece quilting above Spiderman.
Now, THAT'S a Horse of a Different Color by Michelle Reasoner .. this won a ribbon for Best Use of Embellishment .. Michelle said that she was inspired by that color changing horse in A Wizard of Oz. Lots of 3D embellishments on this one.
There's still more to come, but I'll leave them for tomorrow. I have yet to show the more traditional quilts that I liked. Stay tuned.
