A few weeks ago I went with the ladies from one of my mini quilt groups to visit the Crate and Barrel outlet store in Berkeley as well as New Pieces quilt shop followed by lunch. We had a delightful time checking out all the lovely quilting cottons that New Pieces stocks. They probably stock every ombre' that fabric manufacturers carry. Plus they have a Kaffe Fassett wall (yum!), a large Asian section, novelties, color blenders and lots of stripes and polka dots. I didn't really have a need to get anything because I was saving for the outlet store.
Oh my, the Crate and Barrel outlet store is fantastic. I didn't look around at all of the pottery or furniture because all of my attention was riveted by the Marimekko textiles. These cottons were a bit on the heavy side, probably upholstery weight but I think they'll be wonderful as backing fabrics, especially since they're a bit on the polished side. I bought three yards each of a bright red/hot pink and a green print. They'll be big enough for a nice size lap quilt. Aren't they lovely?! They're 100% cotton but I'll pre-wash them in hot water with Shout color catchers to make sure that they shrink and bleed before using them in a quilt.
Steve asked me why I didn't get more. I'm guessing another trip is in my future.
Now I just have to decide what type of pattern that I'd like to use for them. The red backing must be for a quilt of many different red fabrics. Something very subtle, yet rich with deep and light reds. Yes, I must be in one of my red moods. It's not my favorite color but I am attracted to it at times. Usually it's for cars. But a lot of times it's for textiles, most especially shiny reds. It may be fun to plan a red quilt for next year. Ah, let the pattern hunt begin!
